Marjolaine’s campaign poster. She has already surpassed her objective of $5000 and… has pink hair.
Marjolaine Doucet from Dolbeau-Mistassini runs a colourful campaign. For every $1000 she raises, she changes her hair colour.
Her campaign is so successful that she even skipped a colour. “I went from 2000 to 3000 overnight!” A blessing since she suffered from a powerful allergic reaction following a colour change. Her face became red and bloated, but “that’s nothing compared to chemotherapy”, says Marjolaine, who lost both her parents-in-law to cancer.
A month before the Shave-O-Thon in St-Bruno (Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region in Quebec), Marjolaine has already reached her $5000 objective. In fact, she’s at $5353. So, her hair is now pink, Marie-Hélène Côté’s famous colour before she passed away.
“Around here, there’s a young guy who has let his hair grow for two years for this year’s Shave-O-Thon. Another girl is going to donate her hair for wigs. Two causes in one. It’s amazing how the Shave-O-Thon brings awareness, especially in the young.”
Like many I meet in this part of Quebec, Marjolaine is 100% behind the cause. She eagerly awaits the Shave-O-Thon, on the 27th of May, where she will be one of over a hundred people who will have their heads shaved. “People will probably look at me as a cancer patient after that. I want to do it out of solidarity” says the young mother.
